Horizontal Compartmentation - Model In-Place

3 min. readlast update: 03.14.2024

There are three ways of doing horizontal compartmentation, all ways have their merit. Below is a step-by-step way to use the Model In-Place workflow.

It's not possible to check if there have been any changes with the slab when working with this method. The benefit using this method is that the other stakeholders will see the compartmentation automatically correct in their sections without having to change anything.

This workflow is used when the desired outcome is to have a line appear centrally within the slab.

  1. Start by checking the Thickness of the structural floor in the project, use the tab key to cycle through all components until the floor is selected.

  2. Open the floor plan view, turn off all categories except Floors & Fire Protection/Generic Models (Fire Protection [2022-], Generic Model [2020-2021]). If the BFT template is used, use the template “NV_HorisontalCompartmentation”. this will hide everything except Fire Protection (2022-), Generic Model (2020-2021), and floors.

  3. Create a model-in-place

    (Architecture → Component → Model-In-Place),

    choose category Floors.

  4. Name the new family for instance with Fire_Level 1.

  5. Create an Extrusion.
  6. Choose Extrusion tool and select pick lines in Draw panel.

  7. Hover above an exterior line of the floor, press the tab key until all lines are pre-selected and selected.
Find all wall compartmentation around the opening and draw a rectangle around them

  8. In properties, change Extrusion End / Extrusion Start, Subcategory and turn off in Visibility/Graphic override that the geometry does not show in Plan view.

Start / Endpoint should be in the middle of the floor,

in this example is the floor 300mm thick, so Start = -150 and End= -149, so it is 1 mm thick.

  9. In Visibility/Graphic override turn off floor plan.
  10. Tab and select all edges when placing boundaries
  11. Finish the Extrusion and Finish the Model-In-Place.

  12. For the next horizontal compartmentation follow steps 3-8.

Revit will now remember the settings done inside the extrusion such as subcategory,

Visibility/Graphic overrides, the thickness of the extrusion.

  13. Use Connect family to manually connect each compartmentation to the slab.
Note: Audit Trail will not work with this.
